Keep text watermarks short, such as DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, or SAMPLE, and set opacity low enough that the page underneath remains easy to read, often somewhere around 20 to 40 percent. A diagonal angle across the center is harder to crop out than a corner mark. For logos, use a PNG with a transparent background so it does not leave a white box over the content. Preview a few different pages before applying, since busy pages show watermarks differently.
Watermarks usually go on documents you are about to send outside your control, like drafts, proofs, or copies of an ID. Uploading the unmarked original to a server first defeats part of the purpose.
