AI tools are good at a specific kind of PDF work: finding the clause you need in a 60-page contract, condensing a report before a meeting, or giving you a working translation of a document in a language you cannot read. They are not good at being right every time, and they are the one part of TokPDF where something leaves your device.
This guide covers the three AI tools, Chat with PDF, Summarize PDF and Translate PDF: exactly what is sent, the limits, and how to get answers you can rely on.

What is sent where
Every other TokPDF tool processes files entirely in the browser. The AI tools cannot, because the language models run on servers. TokPDF keeps what leaves your device to a minimum:
- The PDF file itself is never uploaded. Your browser opens the PDF and extracts its text locally.
- Only the text is sent, along with your question or settings, to TokPDF’s API, which passes it to open AI models hosted on Cloudflare Workers AI.
- Nothing is stored. TokPDF does not save the document text, your questions or the answers. The only thing recorded is a daily usage counter: your account if you are signed in, otherwise a random browser ID and a hashed IP address.
- Not used for training, according to TokPDF’s privacy policy.
Chat with PDF: ask questions, get page references
Add a PDF and ask a question in plain language. The model answers from the document only and cites pages as [p.N]; click a citation to see that page. If the answer is not in the document, it is instructed to say so rather than guess. Starter questions such as “What are the key dates, deadlines or amounts?” help you get going.
For documents up to about 30,000 characters, roughly 10 pages of dense text, the model reads everything. For longer documents, TokPDF splits the text into passages, finds the ones that best match your question using a semantic search, and sends around nine of them. That keeps answers fast, but it means the model sees only part of a long document for each question. The answer shows which pages were read.
Open Chat with PDF and add the document.
Ask one specific question at a time.
Check important answers against the cited pages before you act on them.
Download the conversation as a text file if you want to keep it. It disappears when you reload the page or load another file.
How to ask questions that get good answers
- Use the document’s words. “What is the notice period for termination?” finds the right passage more reliably than “How do I get out of this?”.
- Ask narrow questions on long documents. “List every deadline in section 4” works better than “Summarise all obligations”, because only the passages matching your question are sent.
- Ask for quotes when precision matters. “Quote the sentence that defines Confidential Information” lets you check the wording directly.
- Follow up rather than restart. The last few messages of the conversation are sent with each question, so “And what about for the landlord?” works.
- Don’t ask for things the text cannot contain, such as a chart’s values when the chart is an image. The tools only see text.
Summarize PDF
Summarize PDF offers three lengths: Short (about 80–120 words), Medium (about 200–350, the default) and Detailed (about 500–900). Formats are bullet points, paragraphs, or key takeaways ending with a one-line bottom line. You can choose the output language, so a German report can be summarised in English.
Very long documents, over about 48,000 characters, are summarised in two passes: each part is condensed into notes, then the notes are summarised. Detail is inevitably lost along the way. Treat a summary as a map that tells you where to read, not as a replacement for reading the parts that matter.
Translate PDF
Translate PDF translates page by page into one of 33 languages, and shows the original and translation side by side. You can pick a page range, which is useful because each translated page counts toward the daily allowance.
It translates text, not layout. The downloaded PDF contains the translated text flowed onto clean pages, one section per original page, without the original images, columns or tables. A Word download keeps the paragraphs editable. For Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Hindi and Bengali, the PDF download is not available yet because letters would not join correctly, so use the Word download. For contracts, medical or legal documents, use the translation to understand the content and have a professional translate anything you will rely on.
Limits you should know
- Scanned PDFs have no text to send. TokPDF detects this and offers to run OCR in your browser first, up to 50 pages per run, in 10 languages.
- Too much text for one request? You can use just the first pages, or split the document with Split PDF.
- Password-protected files must be unlocked first with Unlock PDF.
- AI makes mistakes. Models can misread tables, mix up numbers and state wrong things confidently. Always check figures, dates and names against the cited page.
| Limit | Free |

| Summaries per day | 2 |
| Translated pages per day | 10 |
| Text per request | 300,000 characters, roughly 100 pages |
